Many people have no, or minor side effects with Yasmin. The common side effects persist while using Yasmin are: breast tenderness; bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods; nausea; stomach cramps or bloating; vomiting and weight gain.  The severe Yasmin side effects which need immediate medical attention are : Severe allergic reactions, breast lump or discharge; calf or leg pain, swelling, or tenderness; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain or heaviness; confusion; coughing of blood; fainting; irregular heartbeat; left-sided jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm pain; mental or mood changes; migraines; missed menstrual period; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; persistent, severe, or recurring headache or dizziness; persistent vaginal spotting; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; severe stomach pain or tenderness; shortness of breath; slurred speech; sudden severe vomiting; swelling of the fingers, hands, legs, or ankles; symptoms of liver problems; unusual or severe vaginal bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vaginal irritation or discharge and vision changes.

The following serious adverse reaction has been associated with the use of Yasmin.

Thrombophlebitis; Arterial thromboembolism; Pulmonary embolism; Myocardial infarction; Cerebral hemorrhage; Cerebral thrombosis; Hypertension; Gallbladder disease; Hepatic adenomas or benign liver tumors. Studies say there is evidence of an association between the conditions like Mesenteric thrombosisand and Retinal thrombosisthe and the use of Yasmin.

The adverse reactions reported in patients using Yasmin and are believed to be drug-related. Some of them are : Nausea, Vomiting, Gastrointestinal symptoms, Breakthrough bleeding, Spotting, Change in menstrual flow, Amenorrhea, Temporary infertility after discontinuation of treatment, Edema, Melasma which may persist, Breast changes: tenderness, enlargement, secretion, Change in weight, Change in cervical erosion and secretion, Diminution in lactation when given immediately postpartum, Cholestatic jaundice, Migraine, Rash, Mental depression, Reduced tolerance to carbohydrates, Vaginal candidiasis, Change in corneal curvature (steepening) and intolerance to contact lenses.

Some adverse reactions have been reported in some users of Yasmin and a causal association has been neither confirmed nor proven.

Studies have different suggestions about the adverse effects experienced by women on oral contraceptive combination products.  Some says that use of oral contraceptives decreases the risk of ovarian cancer. Another some claims pelvic inflammatory disease is approximately 50% lower in women taking oral contraceptives. A recent study has suggested that long term use of oral contraceptives is safe and does not adversely affect long term risk for mortality.
